Eye Health

Your Eye Examination at Munnelly Opticians includes a through check on the health of both the front and the back of your eyes. We use the most up to date optical equipment to look for signs of the following:

Glaucoma

This is a build up of pressure in the eye. It needs to be checked regulary, at least every 2 years, as it often has no signs or symptoms. It is checked by using a small painless puff of air on each eye.

Cataracts

This occurs when the usually clear lens of the eye turns cloudy as a result of natural ageing. If a mature Cataract is present a simple painless procedure can be performed to remove it.

Age Related Macular Deneration (AMD): AMD affects the Macula which is situated at the back of the eye. It is responsible for central vision allowing you to see in detail. When AMD occurs it can cause symptoms such as blurred vision or wavy lines or even a blind spot in the centre of your vision. AMD is becoming increasingly common and there is currently no cure. If caught early it can be prevented or affects can be limited by taking Vitamin supplements containing Lutein.

Diabetes

There are 2 types of Diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. It can be treated by Insulin or tablets. Both types can cause Diabetic Retinopathy which affects the eyes by blurring vision. Diabetics are entitled to a FREE eye examination every year on their Medical Card or PRSI.

Dry Eye

Anyone can suffer from Dry Eye but ageing, computer use, artificial lighting and ventilation, smoking, chemicals or contact lens wear can make symptons worse. You may experience grittiness, foreign body sensation, watery eyes and cysts / Styes. We can advise you on treatment for Dry Eye.
